In the summer of 2000, the idea of creating a community among the engineering students interested in business at the UW was brought to fruition. By promoting the ideas of the engineering students and providing training in business, SEBA was born on October 1, 2000 as the brainchild of five engineering students, Mike Quinn (CS), Andrew Chen (Econ), Andy Ten (Econ/CS), Samarth Kulkarni (BioE) and Vikrant Duggal (EE) with Dr. Emer Dooley as the faculty advisor. SEBA was quick to define itself as a premier student group on campus and organized several successful events in the areas of entrepreneurship, finance and consulting. SEBA brought in sponsors including IBM and Voyager Capital and formed several key relationships with other business organizations on campus. While SEBA's main focus remained providing engineering students with new opportunities and promoting the development of an engineering student's business and leadership skills, the organization was well involved in the community with various service-related events.
After several years of success, a new executive team was brought in at the beginning of 2007 to bring SEBA to the next level. Under the leadership of Rob Burke (BioE), Anthony Rodriguez (BioE), Emily Crownover (BioE), Katie McKenzie (BioE), and Fareid Asphahani (MSE) the organization began to take giant leaps forward in its evolution. A new website was designed to allow SEBA members to access information more easily, membership recruitment grew the membership by 50%, and a board of advisors was established to help guide SEBA and give it a better organizational memory. The summer of 2007 proved to be a fruitful planning ground for the year to come. Another blockbuster Science & Engineering Career Fair has been put together with over 150 companies attending. In conjunction with CIE, SEBA is co-hosting the 1st annual EntrepreneurWeek UW, which is a week of activities centered on raising awareness about entrepreneurship. SEBA will also be hosting the 3rd annual Science & Technology Showcase this Fall, which is a display of the technology coming out of UW with the most commercial potential and serves as the kick-off of CIE's Business Plan Competition. This success will only continue to grow, so stay tuned and be sure to attend the next SEBA event!
